WHEREAS, the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence is celebrating its 30th year of advocacy for improved education for all Kentuckians; and
WHEREAS, the Committee endorsed and applauded the Kentucky General Assembly’s leadership in the 2009 passage of legislation (Senate Bill 1) mandating more rigorous academic standards for Kentucky schools; and
WHEREAS, the Committee supported the joint adoption of the Common Core State Standards, now the Kentucky Core Academic Standards, by the Kentucky Board of Education, the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education, and the Education Professional Standards Board; and
WHEREAS, the Committee believes the creation of the standards by a consortium of states that included Kentucky was the best approach to ensuring local control of education programs and policies while providing a means to compare Kentucky students’ performance to students in other states; and
WHEREAS, the Committee recognizes that the Kentucky Core Academic Standards do not mandate a common curriculum among the state’s schools; and
WHEREAS, the Committee supports the implementation of the Kentucky Core Academic Standards in schools and districts in the manner deemed most appropriate by local educators and their communities; and
WHEREAS, the Committee believes the more rigorous requirements of the standards and their reflection of the standards of the highest-performing countries will serve to better prepare Kentucky students for college and the workplace and to succeed in their civic and economic endeavors;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Prichard Committee for Academic Excellence expresses its strong support for the Kentucky Core Academic Standards and their continued implementation in Kentucky schools.
