Student Voice Team Looking Deeper at College Readiness

The  Prichard  Committee’s  Student  Voice  Team is digging deeper into its 2015 findings about factors that hinder high school graduates success in college for a follow-up report on college readiness issues.

The analysis of how Kentucky students define and experience college readiness has included visits to three rural Kentucky counties for conversations with peers and dissemination of a comprehensive student survey.

“After releasing our first report on postsecondary transitions, it became apparent that we had only scratched the surface,” said Sahar Zadeh, a junior at Dunbar High School in Lexington and chair of the Team’s Postsecondary Transitions Committee. “In terms of student success, we had identified three main inhibitors to a smooth postsecondary transition, but what variables have the greatest impact on a student’s future?”

Zadeh said the current project, which involves a group of about 20 Team members, looks for issues beyond reaching academic readiness benchmarks.

The group is partnering with GearUp Kentucky for its visits. The project is backed by a $41,000 State Farm Youth Advisory Board grant that the Team received in September — selected from among 750 applications.

The Prichard Committee Student Voice Team is comprised of over 100 self-selected students, fifth grade through college, working to integrate young people as education research, advocacy, and policy partners in efforts to improve Kentucky schools.
